Pentium 4, Pentium 4-M, Pentium M

I recently bought a Compaq Evo N800V laptop off of eBay just as a decent replacement and mobile option. When I purchased it, the processor was mentioned as being a Pentium 4-M processor.

Now, I've tried researching this topic, but to no avail. People have said that just the regular "Pentium M's" are faster and that the Pentium 4-M's are horribly slow. Others have said that the Pentium M's are the slowest and Pentium 4's are the fastest!

Could someone please, please explain this to me? Thanks.

well its true that a pentium m is faster then a pentium 4-m because the pentium m are newer then the pentium 4 m.not sure about pentium m and pentium 4 i heard they have the same performance

Pentium 4-M's have high clock speeds, but actually perform pretty poorly compared to todays processors. The Pentium M is similar to the Core architecture, which houses the Core Duo and Core 2 Duo processors.

A Pentium M may run at say, 1.8Ghz, but it performs much better then a Pentium 4-M running at say, 2.6Ghz.

So what if we were going to compare my 1.8Ghz Pentium 4-M Laptop to a Desktop computer (nothing new of course)? How would it compare. 1.2Ghz? 1.4Ghz?

i have a t5500 @1.66 Ghz, is there anyway that i could overclock it 1.7, cos mot games have that as a min.
thanks

Hello? Please can we stay on topic here? This is actually VERY important to me. And Nutter, GET YOUR OWN TOPIC!

One again, I'll ask my question:
How will my Pentium 4-M Laptop running at 1.8Ghz, compare in CPU speeds to another desktop computer? 1Ghz? 1.4 Ghz? What?

That still doesn't help me.

How would my Pentium 4-M compare to a regular clocked computer?
The Pentium 4-M is basically the same thing as a Pentium 4, except it's a mobile version, meaning that it had a lower FSB, most likely less cache, and was suppose to run cooler, but clock for clock they were pretty much the same as a desktop P4.

A Pentium M 1.4Ghz runs much, much better then a Pentium 4-M clocked at 1.8Ghz, or even at 2.5Ghz.

What Omega said. Also, a Pentium M will run cooler than any P4 in existence. They are just plain better than the P4.
