Pentium D 820 2.8ghz compared to pentium 4 3.2ghz

depends on what you want to do. id get the pentium 4 for gaming, but id get the pentium d for video encoding.
overall the pentium d is better for multitasking but id go with the pentium 4 because im more of a gamer, and it features hyperthreading anyways and thatd help me play music while i game :)

Yes, extensively multithreaded games do exist now however they are not prevalent: they will be though (meaning the dualcore box will able to handle itself better) and the 400MHz disadavtage can fairly readily be overclocked :)

I just bought a P4 3.2 ghz...very nice and fast, it says 2 CPU's in dxdiag but im not sure if its dual core.... ANYWAY, Pentium D will be good for future gaming because next gen games like Unreal Tournament 2007 and Oblivion will certainly look at dual core processors, but Pentium 4 3.2 ghz has hyperthreading, so it is good for games now. It also depends on how much ram and the video card aswell. Both should do you fine, although i think the Pentium D will last you a bit longer. If you're not a gamer, just get the cheaper one, they are both good.

well I can honestly say I have one of each, and my personal opinion is I'd rather go with the D, it runs hotter, but I do a lot of video stuff and it nearly doubles what I can do. Btw we're taking the 3.2 hyperthreading right? Both are great processors, don't get me wrong, but I think the D is quicker for most of the things I use it for. I don't OC either, and it sounds like the D is better at that anyways
