Pentium D (is it worth with Conroe coming about?)

Pentium D - the last of the pentium breed, dual core, 2.8 - 3.2GHz clock, and Intel EM64T technology, what more could you ask for right? Well with Conroe only months away is Pentium D really worth its bite? Conroe teh first generation of Intel's new Core 2 family is claimed to provide 40% more performance at 40% less power. So is taking a deal - say 35% off a Dell (Dell emailed these coupons out yesterday) - really worth it?

Well lets start with a base $1200 desktop... which would be $780 at 35%... so the question is ... is a $780 system of three months from now going to be faster than a $1200 system today...

Thinking of typical upgrades to the Dell base system... a $1200 system would allow you to upgrade the video ram to 256MB (instead of 128MB), upgrade the harddrive to dual 160GB datasafe (dell's version of raid), upgrade the sound card, and most importantly upgrade the ram from 512MB to 2GB.

i personally want a system that will last for about 2-3yrs and still have good performance ratings and then i like to keep my systems around as servers in their later years... what do you guys think?

would you sacrifice the lastest processor technology for $350+

Why not?

If you are not into gaming I really don't see why the Pent D system won't be giving good service even five years down the road.;) Now as soon as a new designed system enters the older systems drop in price.:) There is always going to be new systems but are they really needed?

Most of the time they aren't needed. Like you said unless your playing games like Doom3 the penitum D will do for a long time to come
