Pentium D or faster Pentium 4 w/ HT??

Ok, I see there are a million posts on dual core vs single core on here, and I realize two is better than one... but all the posts seem to be about AMD. Although I would like to go AMD, I get a good price on Dell's so Intel is the only choice for me. The P4 660 w/ HT (3.6Ghz 800fsb) is only $50 more than a Pentium D 930 (3.0Ghz, 800fsb). The upgrade for a 3.2Ghz Pentium D is $200 more!
I mostly use the comp for the internet, music, basic stuff, but am slowly getting more into gaming. I realize for now most games are not taking advantage of the Pentium D and it will be slower... for now, but when comparing it to future games that will, what will the performance gains be like? What do you guys think... I need some education here so I can make a sound decision. I lean towards the P4 3.6 b/c I need it to keep up with my X1900. Rest of the comp will be: ATI X1900 XTX, 2GB in 2dimm, 150gb raptor, 20" 1600X1200, 1000:1 LCD, and the regular dell stuff. Thanks for any input!

For gaming, AMD really is the way to go. As for good deals on dells, you'll save loads of money if you build yourself.

For your original question, I would go with the lower clocked dual core. The 660 may have HT but its not as good as two physical cores. In the future games will definetly be taking advantage of dual cores.

ya go dual core and if u can go amd i was planning on getting a more expensive intel d but they steered me away to a cheaper 3800+ and they said when it comes to gaming even the 3800 will smoke anything intel but the intel is beter for multitasking

Well right now Dells dont have AMD's, and he said he got a good deal on the Dell system.

The AMD X2 is actually better than the Pentium D's (at least the 8xx series), at gaming and multi-tasking.

I would go with the 3.0Ghz Pentium D.

Also, he could possible have the conroe upgrade route if he could get a BIOS update supporting it (Doubtfull since it will be a dell :D)

Conroe doesnt work on any current chipsets. At least without reworked power regulation.

Does anyone know for sure if I would be able to upgrade to Conroe on a Dell if I go with the Pentium D 930? If not, I might just have to wait...
