Performance loss with a widescreen...

So a few weeks ago I have my new i7 systems with a 260 core 216 video card.

I'm using my 6 year old dell 17" lcd monitor. With this setup I'm running Fallout 3 and Far Cry 2 at max settings with 1280x1024 max resolution as that is what my monitor runs at.

I've been looking at various 22" widescreens as they are well supposed now in gaming (from what I gather) and it would complete my new system.

Then I started to consider that a larger monitor could need more juice from my video card.

So basically will it stress my card that much more to max things out on a 22"?

I see that a lot of the sub $300 monitors run at 1680 x 1050...

If you have the cash go for 24", it has a higher resolution (1920x1200) and it'll make the difference in nearly all your work!

I Guarantee it won't stress. My 9600GSO runs AC at full settings at 1920 x 1080!

Well I went with an hp w2207h. So far it looks great.

Everything seems huge from my old 17" lcd.

With fallout 3 I noticed (using fraps) that during vats my framerate went from 60 to 45-50. So it hurt, but certainly not unplayable. Just moving about the landscape I'm still at 60 for the most part.

Playing COD4 online makes it feel new again.

I think going to the 22'' you will have no proplems. But if you want to game at 1920x1200 with a 24'' you might not be able to play with all the best setting on.

Yeah I was sort of worrying about that. The cost of the 24 vs 22 sort of killed that anyway.

This 22" seems big, but not too big. I'd rather not have to tone down games just to run them 2" bigger.

I guess if I add another gtx260 down the road that should ease the load for future games. I don't plan on doing that until they drop way down in price.
