Just over a month ago, we saw not one, but two reports forecast the arrival of a 3.4GHz Phenom II processor. Today, those reports seem all but confirmed.

An eagle-eyed TR forum member has found a listing for the processor north of the border at Premier Computer Canada. The listing details a Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition clocked at 3.4GHz with 8MB of total cache, a Socket AM3 package, and a 125W thermal envelope. The Black Edition tag also suggests an unlocked upper multiplier.

Premier Computer Canada charges $294.99 CAD ($274 USD) for pre-orders, although it doesn't say when the CPU will become available.

A search for the model number reveals many other listings, most being in Europe. Evidence points to this still-unannounced Phenom II X4 965 costing roughly 20-30% more than the Phenom II X4 940, which would put it in the $230-$250 range in the States. AMD's current flagship, the Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition, is available for $215 on Newegg. (Thanks to michael_d for the find.)

Just go with the 955, as charles624 said, you can easily overclock the 955 to the 965 speed, correct me if im wrong but isn't this like the same thing that amd did with there 7750 and 7850 processors, same chip in all but a couple 100 mhz higher?

can't say I'm interested in the 965, but this could mean the 955 falls into my budget again, or the 945 simply makes my life easier by being cheaper. Either way, win win, another win if you feel like actually buying one of these, I would imagine it'd OC better than previous models.

My guess would be after the 965 is released the 955BE will dry up and maybe replaced with a non BE 955. Like mx344 said, having a 7750BE then releasing a 7850BE really what was the point! I even heard they are releasing a X3 740BE at 3.0ghz. Whats the point of having both a 720BE and a 740BE. The BE should be the top one in the line. If they want to release a higher GHZ. one, the one below it should be dropped or made into a non BE.

I had a similar opinion in another thread not long ago where this CPU came up. Most people (to my knowledge anyway) are only willing to shell out the extra cash for the unlocked multiplier, and with another BE at a lower price point, very few would opt for the 200 Mhz increase and higher potential clocks.
