hey all,

so i got my new cooler last week (corsair h60) and with the low idel + load temps i figured i would try oc'ing

so me being me, this morning without reading anything just went into the bios and started playing.

finally settled on just the cpu multi @ 200x19 (3.8ghz) @ 1.325v

whats funny is that voltage seems low, temps are no higher (ie 44 max) compared to stock.

am i being a complete n00b? and missing something obvious or is everything ok

also wei droped from 7.5 to 7.4, but i know wei is rubbish anyway

Not real unusual, just 400mhz over stock. Got a pretty good chip. The 965 was aittle better clocker then the 955. Dont know why WEI would drop, but thts microsoft for ya. lol

To get any decent performance increase you need to overclock the NB and HT as well. NB as fast as it can go, the higher the better if you have 1600+ memory, for the HT, 2200-2400 is enough. You will need to adjust the voltages for those items as well.

With more voltage on the cpu cores you will hit 4Ghz without too much of a problem, if you have good enough cooling.

Have you stress tested to make sure it is stable?

It is one thing putting those settings in, it is another to make sure they actually work

i ran the stress tests in amd overdrive for an hour and everything seemed fine, played a little dirt 3 maxed out, totaly perfect,

on thing i noticed tho, is it doesn't seem to be clocking back any more, (unless i switch back to stock settings.

previously, if my pc was idel, it would clock back to 0.8ghz, and mid load 2.2ghz, then when gaming 3.4 ghz, but when oc'd it just sits at 2.8, which obviously leads to higher idel temps.

so i guess, when i have time again, its, push multi as far as it will go, then ht, then step voltage, rinse and repeat?

whats the safe limits for voltage? as ive not changed that at all up till now.

last question, with the new cooler(h60), i have a feeling the thermal paste got a bit smudged when i fitted the heat sink, but 26 idle seems pretty low to me with 44 max load even at 3.8ghz, anybody think its worth removing and re apping the artic silver?

Overclocking stops Cool n quiet, which is the setting which underclocks the CPU when idle. It isn't really a biggy, just means you are using more power and, as you mentioned, get higher idle temps.

I wouldn't raise multi then HT, I would raise multi until unstable, then bump the voltage by the lowest increment and test gain. Do this until it is stable, then push further if you wish, so long as it is with in reasonable load temperatures.

You will be safe up to around 1.45-1.5V. You could probably go further, but I personally wouldn't be comfortable with that, and I wouldn't recommend it.

Finally, your temperatures seem ok, so I wouldn't bother reapplying paste until it gets old. Doing it now you will see either no difference, or at most just 1 or 2 degrees. As it is a new cooler too, it probably hasn't had curing time (I don't know when exactly you put it on), so once you have your OC as you intend to keep it, the temperatures will probably drop by a degrees or two over the next month anyway. You can tell when your paste is going off because you will be ~5+ degrees above what your old idle and load temperatures were. If you want to keep it running at the coolest possible, then I would fully clean out your system and replace thermal paste every 6-12 months
