Phone can't see sim card

I have an old Nokia non-smart phone and in recent months there were times when it had trouble with the sim card. I would get a message saying "sim card registration failed" and then it would act as if it had no sim card and then at some point it would just ask me to input the pin, as if it now can see the sim card.

This has been going on for months, but yesterday it got to where it can't see it at all. When I turn it on it asks me "start up the phone without a sim card?" I tried removing and wiping the card and all sorta stuff but it doesn't help.

Does anyone know what might be the matter? Is it the card or the phone and can I do anything about it? I've A LOT of money prepaid on this card and would really not like to lose it.

UPDATE: Well, I tried a different sim card in the phone and it went just fine, so its the card. Is there anything I can do? As I say, I have A LOT of money on this card, would really not like to lose it.

If the card is beyond salvaging can I somehow buy a new card but retain my old account with the phone company along with all the money I've prepaid?

Just go into your carriers store, tell them you have an issue with the sim card, and ask for a new one. Your number and account are tied to that one, so they'll just transfer it over to the new one.
