Photo Editing Software

In anticipation of getting a new camera for Christmas, I am looking for a decent but inexpensive photo editing software for my Windows 8.1 Lenovo laptop.

I looked at Paint Shop Pro x 7 but its looks not only expensive but complex. I just need basic Cropping/Retouching/Resizing etc for what will be jpeg images.

Could someone kindly suggest something (not to expensive) that would cater for my needs.

Very many thanks.

I'd look into Lightroom which is around $145, or Photoshop Elements which is around $85, with Lightroom being the much better option. Or if you wanted to pay per month, you can look at Adobe Creative Cloud.

I too would recommend Lightroom. It really doesn't have too much of a learning curve.

Thanks for the tip about Lightroom - looks good but sadly even in UK Pounds the price is out of my league. Was really looking for a cheap one with basic facilites.

I use Corel paint shop pro x6, it usually comes top of most sensible priced software reviews, I find programs like photoshop etc to a disgusting rip off, no program is worth that kind of money.

Cyberlink photo director is also pretty good.

Blimey - the Corel x6 is more expensive that x7 which is odd. Cyberlink over £100.

I do not want much just the basic Cropping/Resizing/Brightening etc on jpeg images not the all singing dancing RAW stuff etc. Must be compatable with Windows 8.1.

Another vote for PS Elements, £66.43. Good value for money and you are not hooked on a monthly subscription like CC.

Yes I did not know corel had x7 out now, also cyberlink has a new photo director 6.

with the last edition corel came top of most photo editing software reviews, but I notice this time most reviews favor power director 6 over psp x7

If you just want something basic and free, try gimp as recommended above, also give paint.net & fotor a try, all are free

I have looked at the free options - all very difficult to use - Gimp saves altered pics with a different extention mine .jpg their .gmp.

I have decided to save my pennies and get Corel photo x 7 even though at least 90% of whats in there will never be used.

Thanks for your help guys.

Every photo editing app can save images with different extensions. You just need to choose .JPG as the file type to save as

The default for Photoshop is .PSD, as Voyagerfan said, you just choose .JPG as the image format to use when saving.

I would recommend you to use Gimp. It is easy to use and an efficient photo editing tool. Gimp 2.8 is available and I use this software to create graphics for my game making projects. In case of photo editing, it is a great tool.

There's always torrents for Lightroom/Photoshop but those can fill your computer with viruses...

just ask the kid who had to throw away a hard drive... :(

Currently I use a legal copy of Lightroom 5.... Best thing I've come to know.

Don't use Save in Gimp; use Export instead. It'll let you save as JPG.

You might want to edit that post. We don't allow discussion of torrents or illegal software here. Read the rules.
