Picture files on old HD showing as .vbs files ???

I just hooked up an old win 98 HDD to pc in order to get some pictures off of it, but it looks like all the pictures I had on it are showing up as .vbs files, which don't open. I've googled this a bit, and looks as though maybe all the files were infected by a virus. Is this the case? And if so, can I save them somehow?

EDIT:
I just realized the files still have a .jpg extension, but they are VBScript files

Thanks for the response. I just tried right-click and edit, and indeed a wordpad file came up and it was text about the virus. It said was "plan colombia" virus v.1.

Is there anyway I can salvage the pictures, or did the virus ruin them for good?
