well just recently my computer speed has gone from good to bad to worse. within the last week my computer slowed to a snails pace. and what worse, it takes about 15 min to reboot...any suggestions on this?

my computer is fairly new, about 1 yr old. its a dell dimension 3000

ill leave it to the pros to lmk where to start

first off welcome to the forums.
2nd - i'd recommend do a checkdisk on your drives.
3rd - put your pc in someone else's rig (with updated virus/adware/spyware protection) and scan.

4th - Do a defragmenter
5th - A disk cleanup (using ccleaner) and registry cleaner

hope it helps

EDIT:Those are the steps I do if a pc is so slow that i can't work on it.

at work, it is quicker to do a format and reghost the darn thing :) after that if it is still slow then it is a hardware problem.

it takes longer to do all those that to do a reformat. you should do it if you dont have anything you want to keep on the drive.

1. Thanks
2. What?
3. What?
4. I defragment weekly
5. I use ccleaner often and regseeker

if it is indeed hardware problem, none of those things will do anything. it takes at lease 3 hours to do all those when if you reformat it takes maybe 1 hour to format and reinstall xp. you can try spend 3 hours doing those and if it didnt work out then spend another hour reformat/reinstall.

what set up do you have for your demension 3000

where do i go to find my computer specs? im a computer noob

right-click my computer-->properties. (to check specs)
anyway for me reformat is not the solution

or go to start-->run-->type in DXDIAG (to check specs again)
check the system tab

Dell Dimension 3000
Intel Celeron CPU 2.40 GHz
512 Mb Ram

Ok, Celeron is a wack cpu honestly.whatever you do,go get a Pentium 4
what's the Hard drive capacity ? (don't tell me you don't know this one)
If it's big enough and you are ready with the idea to format download partition magic www.soft32.com/download_151.html
and split it in 2.Use the second partition and put all your stuff on and format your C
