Ping Request Trouble

Hi,

From my Server am constantly pinging google.com for say 25 hours and pushing the results to an output file. Approximately i have encountered 40 to 50 'Request timed out' i.e losing packets.

Could anyone tell why this packet lost?. Before I suspect the Internet Connection and my service provider, i would like ensure all other things pertaining to our side is configured correctly...

My Server configuration:
IBM X3650 M4 (2 U Rack), 2 x Intel Xeon E-5 2620 (6 Core) 2.00Ghz , 15 Mb Cache, 1333 Mhz, 64 GB (8x 8GB) , 2 x 300 GB SAS HDD 2.5" Hot Swap, Multiburner, Raid 01 in built (M5110e Card)

Am using 30 mbps Leased Line with my Service provider

What kind of connection to your ISP? Are there any errors on the interface?

50 packets lost over 25 hours is ~0.056% packet loss, it's more of a waste of your time to worry about.

40-50 drops in 25 hours (~90,000 requests) is nothing to worry about. There is always some minor packet loss when going out to the internet and back, it's the nature of TCP/IP.

Guys thanks for the responses.

I could understand this is negligible, but am encountering request timed out error sequentially for 3 times. This is not every time, yet it happens at times....

Do you get the same behavior when pinging the default gateway? If there is no loss to the inside interface of your router then it is ISP/WAN based. It may even be an issue outside of your ISPs network.

You won't have any luck getting an ISP to troubleshoot that limited level of packet loss. Even on enterprise connections, unless you have thousands of errors on an interface throughout the day they will not do anything for you.

Also keep in mind for services that use TCP the packets will simply be retransmitted.
