Pioneer dvd drive trouble

hi i have just built my new pc everything works fine exept the
Pioneer DVR-112DBK 18x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter drive,
i backed up my data from my old pc to dvd and this new drive i bought wont read the disks here is what happens,
under my computer the drive is seen as a dvd rw drive but as soon as i put a dvd into it the symble in my computer goes to cd rom and i cant access the data on the disk i have tried burning to a disk 3 diffrent makes and it still happens please help. my sig
abit ip 35 pro mobo
4 gb crucial balistic ram
intel q6600 cpu
bfg 8800 gts.
 
I ran into this going from one case with an ide dvd burner to the new build with a sata model and a data dvd appeared blank for some reason. Both here are Sony brand but the sata is not made by Lite-On but another manufacturer altogether.

But it may have to do with the software originally used seeing a different format. I ran into this when trying to retrieve files on cd-rs burned on the older cd writers at times. Have you tried reading any disks burned on the new build to see if the drive is good?
 
it will read normal dvd films and it installed windows its just when i put my back up dvds in and if i go to put data on a dvd i thought it might not like the memorex dvds so i got 2 other makes with the same result.
 
When you say dvds are those dvd-rws or dvd-rs or dvd+rs? I never touch Memorex sorry! I found that to be a problem brand to start with. For data dvds here surprisingly I've been seeing great results with Sony. For cd-rs TDK have seen great results over the last few years.

But I did run into track data where it looked like something was already burned to disks on a sealed container of TDK dvd-rs and Princo some odd name lower priced blanks bought at a pc show. On the drives here on the new build as well as the older case the rws can't be read for some reason.

Plus I have to use the sata model dvd burner to install programs since there was a problem with the auto run seen on the new ide cd writer that since seems to read and write ok. That told me the drives here were good while Windows was seeing a problem there.

I've been having better results for most things with Vista over XP on the new build lately. I suspect you may need a bios update for the board or a need to look over Windows and bios settings while the drives will probably turn out to be defect free there.

Suddenly one stubborn to read dvd now sees the burning program's disk number and the drive is now dvd-ram instead of cd rom when seen in MyComputer when opening up an explorer window. The option of choices of do nothing, play disk, and the rest is appearing more on a regular basis while not seen at first. I suspect a Windows problem is likely there as well.
