Talking but my old computer, 6600gt. I know how many pipelines it has but that doesn't mean all of them are unlocked.

i no.... but none of these are really anwsering my question. How can i tell if all my pipelines (8) are unlocked. Some video cards say that have X amount of pipelines but they are not always unclocked.

There probably referring to cards that can have extra piplines unlocked, a 6600GT has 8 pipelines.

And just for the record, the 7800GT has 20, and the 7800GTX has 24.

Haha usually when pipelines are "locked" is when you buy a model that's under the "big one." A good example is the X800 series. The top X800 has all of its pipelines unlocked, while the model below it has maybe 2 "locked." just unlock them and you get the same performance than the higher model

Just as Geoff mentioned, the 7800gt has 20 and the gtx has 24. You should not be worried about unlocking pipelines seeing as many of the 7800 series pipelines are very unstable when unlocked, you should also not attempt this unless you are sure of what you are doing.

i dont think anyone has ever successfully unlocked the 4 disabled pipelines. the quad, as it is called, is not locked, it's apparently fully disabled.

I know my friend unlocked all the pipes in a lower model X800... but that might not be possible on a 7800GT.

The extra pipelines on a 7800GT are laser cut, to prevent anyone from unlocking them. You can often do it on older or cheaper models, but sometimes the cards used had defective pipelines. If, for example, 2 of the pipelines didn't work, the manufacturers would just disable them and sell it as the cheaper card.
