I dont know much about computers, but i need a new computer
i want it to be mostly gaming and the price range is around $700 or $800

i was thinking:

Basic Computer Case

eVGA 256-P2-N381-TX Geforce 6800XT 256MB DDR PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego 2000MHz HT Socket 939 Processor Model ADA3700BNBOX - Retail

CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered System Memory Model VS2GBKIT400C3 - Retail

Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

i didnt search around too much and i only average with computers at best

i was just wondering if anyone can tell me if this is a good setup...and make any suggestions on what i should get instead...or what i should change

thanks!

I would get Dual Core if you are going to be gaming cause games are starting to be multitthreaded. and i would also wait tell the end of July cause Conroes coming out and AMD is going to be cutting there prices alot and the Dual Cores will be alot cheaper. but if you dont want to do that your build looks good except for your videocard i would get at least a 7600GS but a 7600GT would be alot better. and you forgot your powersupply to.

AMD is indeed in the process of cutting their prices considerably. July sometime is supposed to be the next big price drop on their cpu's. Whether you get your computer before then or wait until after prices have fallen some more, go with AM2 for sure. Almost same exact prices as skt 939 systems, with ddr2 ram usage and upgradability compared to skt 939. (939 is now dead-ended)

Here's a VERY basic list of what you might want to consider from your current component list:

-Centurion 5 case
-Quality power supply - possibly an Antec or FSP Group
-A decent $80-$90 skt AM2 motherboard
-Maybe an AMD Athlon 3800+ or X2 3800+ processor (possibly depends whether you plan to wait or not due to price drops in dual-core processors)
-Geforce 7600GS or 7600GT, both excellent price performance...get the 7600GT if you can.
-Everything else, whatever...HDD, FDD, CD/DVD, etc.

Basically, whatever you do, don't get the 3700+ San Diego. The 3800+ Venice is way cheaper for probably better performance out of the box. AM2 is probably a no-brainer as well. Good luck on your system.

You've selected a microBTX case with an ATX motherboard. You'll need to find an ATX case.

Other suggestions:
  • Switch the video card to a 7600GS/GT
  • Get a reasonable PSU
  • You'll get better performance by dropping down to 1GB of RAM and upgrading the video card, if you're on a tight budget.

if i do wait for prices to go down...is it really significant...about how much of a price cut are we talking?
