So I know next to nothing about hard drives and the hdd 101 sticky made my head spin:confused: What do I need to get an external hard drive? Can I buy just any type of hard drive and then buy a hdd case? How can I connect it to the USB port?

The best deals I've seen so far are 80 gb Maxtor 7200 and 80 gb Maxtor SATA. The SATA one costs a bit more than the other. What's the difference and which do you think is better?

Hope you can help me out. Thanks in advance;)

SATA ones are generally faster than the other. It depends what you want the drive for. If you are after accessing music or videos at high speeds then the SATA one will be the best. If you are using it to store word documents or data files then the other will be better. I need an external drive but they tend to cost more than internal ones.

Do you need to buy a "special" external hdd? I thought it's just the usual HDD put in a special case. But I'm a noob so please enlighten me. I need it to store mainly music and video files.

And don't external harddrives also have heating issues?
