Playing HD Content with XP Media Center?

I just picked up a 42" HD LCD TV. I have been using a decent computer running Media Center 2005 for my media for a year or so. The PC is set to run MCE on startup and its the only thing the pc is uded for. I am a little confused about use MCE for HD stuff.. I know I have seen so called "High Def" content in an AVI file and it plays on media center but is that true HD?.. can an AVI file be true DVD?.. whenever I look for a movie in HD it has files extenstions that I dont recognise.. Is there a standard for HD?.. does XP even support HD?.. Thanks

I am not sure but i dont think it has to be a certain format because i have a hd that is wmv and i think hd means that it is just at a higher resolution.
