Playing Music From Remote PC on Network.

Hey there. I was wondering about playing music from a remote PC on my network. I use VLC at the moment which is fine. I'd really like to be able to use Windows Media Player because of the awesome search option, but when trying to play the file from a remote PC i get an error saying "WMP does not recognize the file type" But when I play it on the family server, it works fine. Also there is lag time when loading a song from the server to my PC.

I am on a 54 mb/s wireless connection. I really want WMP because of the search functionality. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix both these problems?

Problems :

1) Slow loading of a music file when playing it on my laptop, From the Server.
2) Some files (60% or so i'd say) give me an error message.

thanks!

I believe that most of the loading lag is not going to be easy to get rid of with WMP. I personally do not like WMP because it's a resource hog and just generally screws with stuff. If you really like the search functions, I'd look into using iTunes, I believe it has a better search function than WMP, and is a little more stable and less of a resource hog.

As for the error message, I wonder if you don't have some of the audio codecs required for those songs. I currently use the K-Lite codec pack and it is working pretty well for me...

what kind of files are they? We have a home network and we have no problems playing music on any of the PCs. All our music is stored in one PC and that folder is set to be shared on the network. We use WMP. There is a bit of lag (a second or two), but once the song starts it plays fine.

If you copy and paste one of those songs onto the remote PC, can WMP play it ok? or do you still get an error?
