I am not really up to date on specific brands or models or even all of the specs, but I just went through and picked things according specs I am aware of, along with price and ratings. So feel free to make any other suggestions. I did notice the i7-950 is only $15 more (and realize I would need a different motherboard), but are there any disadvantages to it? Should I go that route? I am totally open to any other recommendations. I am choosing Intel here mainly because I have always had Intel machines. My budget is around $1000, but if I can get something that will suit my needs for a lot less, I wouldn't mind going that route. I do not play games, and the most intensive thing I would use this for would be photoshop and also will start manipulating video files taken from an HD camcorder.

Looks good, you could increase your RAM speed if you wanted. And your hard drive you have picked out is a 6Gb drive but your mobo is 3Gb so it will run at 3Gb... if you wanted to downgrade to a 3Gb and save money that could be an option but what you have will work. Same with your video card you have pcie 2.1 and your mobo is 2.0 no biggie though.

if you stick with intel, i would get this motherboard. it has usb 3.0 and sata 6 gb/s and is cheaper.

Ok cool thanks, at least I am on the right track here then. So what are your thoughts on getting the i7-950 instead of the 870 for the $15 difference? What are the pros and cons of it?

one benefit is triple channel ram. the i7-950 will perform better as well in most cases (assuming the cpu would be the limiting factor).
