Please Help!!! Computer wont start....

Hey, it gives me a good excuse to get rid of this POS Prescott
Well now you have the excuse you were looking for ... so whats the problem?

Anyways, I have heard of people running it without Heatsinks
In colloquial terms, yes, a waterblock isnt refered to as a heatsink but i dont think you had one of those either

The funny thing is, I'm not upset.

Lemme guess, you didnt pay for it? :P

Anyway, is my CPU still def. fried? And is the mobo OK to sell?
Well try it! Cant answer you from across the internet

I'm running the 775 3.4 ghz at 44 degrees(under the 48 degrees standard according to Intel) with just the stock heatsink and fan.
:) It's the Socket478 Pressys that had heat issues, the LGA775 ones behave themselves for the most part :)

I need to be sure that the CPU is dead before I go out and buy a new one
You'll need a working mobo, ram, vc and PSU to test that out absolutly :)

Well how do I know if all of those are working? I'll go down the list:
Mobo: When I turn on the PSU, the green light comes on, stays on. When I turn on the computer, it gets to the screen of the motherboard, beeps once, and shuts down.
Ram: I have no idea how to tell if that's working or not. Could I test it on my dad's PC? He has a Dell Dimension 4600. How do I know if my Ram is compatible with that comp.?
VC: Well, my monitor displays everything fine, and wouldnt a bad vid. card not display anything on the monitor?
PSU: All my fans spin up, computer turns on, just shuts down after 10 seconds.

So I dont know how to tell if this stuff is bad. I think I am going to buy a new mobo and CPU and see if it works. If the other things are bad, could it damage the new mobo and CPU?

No, I paid for the whole thing...I know it's a lot of money, but I just look at it as a hard lesson, that I definitely wont do again...It's kind like I'm working for free for the next couple of weeks...:o

Thanks for the help, It is greatly appreciated,
D

You can mostly assume stuff is working when it's new.

If the other things are bad, could it damage the new mobo and CPU?

And the ram and anything connected to the PCI slots directly.

I mean since the computer isnt working. If the CPU did in fact fry, could it have damaged those other things?

I was being too subtle ... what i was saying was
- Buy a new motherboard
- Find one that you know works

When you've satisified either condition, you can assume the mobo works.

Ok, I must be an idiot. I dont understand what your saying. You dont think anything other than the mobo is damaged?

Ok lets start over

  1. When i said
    Me said:

I mean just that ... in order to determine if a CPU is working as it should, you need functional mobo, ram, vc and psu ... now if you dont know if any of those components are working than that means you have not met the initial requirements of "need functional components". Note that I have not make any mention of whether your components are functional or not
  2. When I said
    Me said:

I alluded to the fact that you may have to buy new stuff. Because, right know you dont know whether the stuff works or not right? As per point #1, if you dont know if the component is functional than you cannot say it is functional
  3. Now when i said
    Me said:

I meant just that. You need to get functional components. How you get them is irrelevent. In suggested buying new stuff. Now I offer the alternative of "if you happen to have a spare motherboard lying around..."

You dont think anything other than the mobo is damaged?

Nobody can tell you. To determine if a mobo works, you need a functional CPU, RAM, PSU, VIDEO.

Ok, I understand. What your sayin is everything is fine? Just kiddin', I got it. Well, I decided I am going to take it in to Best Buy Geek Squad and have them do Diagnostics on it. Either that or Action Computers, a computer repair place near by. The reason for this is because I dont have any spare parts, and I dont know how to determine if they're working on my own. Thanks a lot for the help though Praetor. Sorry for being a pain in the ass, I'm still a newb.

Thanks again everyone,
D

No worries, glad it got through :) ... next time dont pointlessly fry components :P

:o I'll try not to. I'll just use this as a lesson for my kids someday... "Don't ever do stupid shi* with your computer..."
