Please help get old fan off video card

I am trying to replace the fan on my video card and I am having trouble getting the old fan heatsink off from my vid card.

I already removed the fan and the little black plug things, but the metal part wont come off. I think it is glued to the chip on the vid card. Any tips on getting this part off so I can replace it? I posted a pic of what I am trying to get off.. Thanks!

twist it some, see if it gives, never try to pry it off or forcefully pull it off, just try some twisting
 
Oh oh...seems to me it could be stuck on with the ceramic glue. That means there is basically no way you can get the baby off. I may be wrong.

You can freeze it and pop it off. Stick it in a plastic bag and air seal it as best you can, set in freezer for a few hours. It will make the glue/ceramic that holds it on brittle, and hopefully it will crack off.

As said before, never use force.
 
Twisting didn't work... its pretty stuck on there.. It's in the freezer now, lol. Hopefully that will work! Thanks guys... Anyone else have any tips?
 
I take back what i said, about "never use force". If your name is Luke Skywalker, or Obi Wan Kenobi, or you have any affiliation with STAR WARS, you have total permission to use "the force" :P

if you got the metal red hot, then your card would melt. So i'd give that a big no no :P
 
doubtful, ceramique thermal paste is designed to transfer heat, and lots of it. For a vid card probably 80-100C. Unless you can get it hotter than 100C, that'd be a no go i think.
 
From a guide i found on the net...

If your old GPU heatsink is epoxied on, I suggest putting your graphics card in the freezer for a while, then using dental floss or another strong thread or wire to slowly cut through the epoxy - just ripping it off is likely to damage your gpu, and kill your card. To remove the old pushpins, just use needle nose pliers and clamp the pins. Add a little pressure towards the card and voila! Instant old GPU heatsink removal! I had this problem with my old dell, the CPU was stuck to it's heatsink. The problem there was that dell didn't put thermal paste on it at all. I simply used floss, and a lot of force with it, and popped it off.
