Please help me out with this stupid question...

My friends have told me over and over that turning your computer on and off when your done with it is a bad thing. They keep telling me that I should just keep it on 24/7 because it will last longer that way. True or false?

I assume it's false, it sounds stupid.

Continuous heatup-cooldown cycles wear the components, esp. processor, out. If you turn your computer on-and-off around 1000 times a day, yes, it is bad. But whether you turn your computer on a couple of times a day or have it running 24/7 probably won't make a big difference...and it's also good to think about energy consumption. Electricity is not free, you know.

I wouldn't have my computer running 24/7.

I have mine running all the time, but this is because I have it doing things without me, including running a web server, so it's up to you.

Over the years I have left some on most of the time, almost 24/7 and shut some down when not in use and havent really noticed any more hardware failures one way or the other.

Some big servers computer do run 24/7 without any issues. But if you frequently turn on/off will wear it like what has been said above, or you seldom turn it on will also break it cause moisture will accumulate inside it, you need heat for power consumption to drive it away.
