"The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect."

I just bought this external firewire harddrive. I recorded a song for a client. I went to burn the file in Nero. Inside Nero I decided to change the name of the folder it was in. Now I can NOT open the folder and the file names changed. The files are now named:
q4
o
r4
q4f
etc.

and if I try to open the folder I get this:

W:\q4[] is not accessible.
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

The drive is formatted in Fat32, but my PC is NTFS internally.
Win XP Pro
Maxtor External Firewire 500GB drive

Also when I turned the harddrive off and turned it back on, the partition names all changed to "Local Disk".

PLEASE HELP ME RETRIEVE THE DATA!

Thank you in advance,

Michael

Probably have to repair the windows from using Windows Installtion CD. It'll just repair it and might work. It depends what file was it. Not sure what kind file you were talking about.

The Windows installation CD didn't repair it.

ANY OTHER IDEAS, ANYBODY?

The file that I can NOT access was/is a Pro Tools Session folder, including the Pro Tools session and another folder of all of the audio .wav files.

Thank you everybody for your ideas and help!

Often this sort of problem can be fixed by taking the drive out of the external casing, and plugging it in inside the computer, as an internal drive. Windows chkdsk can then repair any errors on the drive.

Ok lets get some details.... nowhere enough info here.

PRAETOR!!!!!! come to the rescue!!!!!
Yeah so you see, if people ask for me directly, odds are I'll simply ignore it for a few weeks....(i'm not being too subtle am i? ;))

If you dont know the answer, Dont post!
And dont annoy admins! :P

the hard drive is a 500gb Maxtor internal drive mounted in an external firewire Vantec shell. Formatted into (8) fat32 partitions. This is the first time I used it. no other information is on the drive besides 2 folders containing Pro Tools song data; one is accessible, and the other is not-both on the same W: partition.

I finished recording the song in Pro Tools, closed pro tools and opened Nero. I clicked create Data CD, then add files, as I looked at the folder I decided to rename the folder from "dre" to another name. As soon as I hit enter, I could no longer access the file, Nero couldn't burn it, I can't copy it, etc. If I right click on any of the files in the folder, it says it's a "read only file" and I can not change it's proerties. NOW, I tried plugging the drive into a different firewire port and when I click on the drive W: it says it is unformatted!!!

What else do you want to know?

I'll try putting the hard drive into my computer tomorrow to see if that will work. Sorry, it's 3am and I just got home from a long day. Thank you all very much, it means a lot to me. You guys are very nice to help me.

tell us exactly what did you rename the file too, it looks from post 1 like you renamed it q4[]

is that correct?
Dont panic yet, try installing the drive internally as was suggested, then get back to us
