Please help - sharing WIFI from hotspot

Hello,

I need some help, I have spent awhile looking into this and cannot find the solution.

My laptop is picking up a Wifi signal from a nearby hotspot. However I can only pick this up when my laptop is right in the corner of the room.

As a result my other devices cannot use the connection. How would I share my Wifi connection from my laptop (windows Vista) so that my other devices could pick up the signal?. (so my Laptop can be in the corner of the room and transmit the signal to my other devices).

I have found guides on sharing WiFi, but none that apply to this particular set-up, I have also found programs that can share connections, but none of them seem to work with vista.

Please advise. (I am forced to use public wifi while my new connection is being set-up).

Thank you, sb

The short answer is you can't do what you are trying to do. Your laptop can't receive a wireless signal, and retransmit it.

What you want to do is possible with other hardware however, such as a wireless repeater.

Hello,

Thank you, no wonder I could not get it to work!.
is there anyway to make this happen with a regular USB wifi dongle, or would the only way be a repeater, or setting up a router to act as a bridge?.

Thanks

You should be able to get it to work with two wireless adapters, however you should note that it means your computer will have to be on in order for it to work, which really isn't ideal. Wireless repeaters aren't much more expensive than a second wireless adapter either, such as this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833315112&ignorebbr=1 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833168045&ignorebbr=1 for $25.
