Please help/ Upgrading cpu for Pentium 4 Laptop

Hi my processor is overheating (its pretty old) and I am trying to buy a new processor for my Sony laptop PCG-FRV27, right now it has Intel Pentium 4, 2.6ghz speed, its Northwood, L1 Trace Cache -12K. L1 Data Cache - 8KB. L2 chache - 512KB, Socket type 478 Pin, die size 131 mm2. It could be a bit slower or a bit faster than the processor I have right now.

Someone suggested repairing the fan and cooling system but they do work fine. I can't work with the current processor because it overheats so much that it automatically shuts down the computer. Fan and cooling system work fine.

Newegg has a processor in stock but its a bit faster - Intel Pentium 4 2.8B Northwood 533MHz FSB 512KB L2 Cache Socket 478 Processor - OEM - so I am wondering if this would work with my laptop. Here is the link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116215

I already bought this item without thinking ahead. It has very exact spcs as my laptop processor, the only thing is that its a bit faster and it doesn't specify whether its for laptops of desktops.

I am lost because I am not sure whether its a desktop processor or laptop, or it doesn't matter?

If anyone knows, (and if the Newegg processor won't work) could you please suggest a processor that would work with my laptop?

Thank you very much

Thats a desktop processor, but it is possible that it could work in your laptop. If you told us ahead of time, I have a Northwood 2.2Ghz that I would sell for almost nothing...

The CPU in your laptop may be a socket, or it may be soldered on. Once you open it up you will see.

If you try to upgrade a laptop for anything other than the RAM, you might as well just get a new laptop. By the time that you get the necessary parts and everything, it will get you most of the way to a new one. Plus, the parts are usually proprietary and nearly impossible to make sure they are compatible.

Hi, thank you all for lightning-speed replies. This is a great forum. The thing is I posted the same question on another forum and almost no one replied and when they did they were vague and unhelpful.

If it doesn't work and I return it, I would like to buy the CPU that you have. How much would you sell it for?

Thanks again

I was thinking this could be easy, since I only needed to change the cpu... just take out the old processor and put a new one in :))) and it was quite cheap, compared to lets say buying a new computer...

It may be cheap, but changing out the CPU in a lappy is very difficult, not to mention laptop ruining sometimes. Dont forget, if you go forward with this, to get some new thermal paste, like Arctic Silver 5.

Thank you very much for reminding about the glue. I didn't remember that. i will keep it in mind for sure.

I already opened the laptop and got to the place where the cpu is housed. it was a bit tricky but I managed it. I took out the old cpu (just to see how it is done) and placed it back. Laptop works fine (besides the overheating issue that is) as it used to before.

Did you find out if you can even repleace the laptop processor with a desktop CPU? I was really only using mine as a reference, but on eBay you can get CPU's faster then mine for about $20-$30.

As far as I know some people have done it. I know many who have used laptop CPU is desktop computers, and I believe I've heard about some people who've done vice-versa.
