Please help!!! Wireless gateway trouble

Basically i have just bought a linksys wireless adsl home gateway. I have followed the setup cd. This includes;
removing any modems which i did.
I then attched an ethernet cable from the router to the pc.
A filter was added to the phone socket
and a modem cable added from the filter to the router
power cable was also plugged into the router[/LIST]

The first time i tried installing it, it didn't work because it could not find an internet connection. But for some reason after a few attempts i got a signal and the router installed. But for some reason i cannot connect to the internet, it just says error 633; modem already in use.

Am i right in thinking i no longer need the old modem? If so why do people still use their modems when it is supposed to have one built in?

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks

im confused. For starters take out the modem that you arnt using.

All you need is:
1 cable modem
1 router
1 pc
1 ethernet card

cable modem goes into router, router goes into pc. Second Pc/laptop must have wireless ethernet card.
Second pc/laptop catches signal from router and vala, ya got the net..

I forget but do you need a filter right at the computer or just the lines besides the one connected to the computer? Try it both was to be on the safe site :P

thanks for the replies guys.

Problem is my modem has no ethernet port so i cannot link it to the router.

The reason i bought this linksy's gateway was because i thought it was advertisd to have an adsl modem within the router, so i wouldn't need a new modem with and ethernet port.

Here are the exact words on the box:
ADSL2+ modem, internet sharing router, 4 port switch and wireless g access point all in one box.

Now i assumed everything would be here to get connected to the internet via the router only. Or does this mean i must have a modem with an ethernet port as well?

Again thanks for any further replies.
