One day, when I tried to start up my computer I got the startup message

"we apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully. a recent hardware or software change might have caused this."

I could either start it in safe mode or revert back to the previous settings or just start it up normally.

Well.. whatever I chose it just goes straight back to the same menu and I have no idea how to fix it. Even when I click on safe mode it still goes straight back. Can someone please help me. thanks.

Is this being seen on XP or Vista? For XP the option to repair the current installation if the option is available once enough restore points have been created is called the "Repair to Install" non destructive method. What this does is replace the primary system files while leaving the current programs and files//folders intact.

An excellent article for repairing XP can be reviewed on this at http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

For Vista if you have the installation disk onhand for a custom build and probably seen on recovery disks for prebuilt systems as well the repair tools section seen on the first screen when booting from that is at the bottom half there. You simply choose the repair startup problem option in the repair tools menu screen when selecting that over the install Windows now option.

Note whenever performing a repair install on XP Windows will still need to be reactivated as part of the process.

yeah, it's windows XP. But i'm not really a computer wizard.. What would you rate the toughness of fixing this on a scale of 1 to 10? that link seems really complex and i'm not sure if I can comprehend it :P

That's one of the easiest there. It goes fast and easy just as if you were going to perform a regular installation except one thing. Once get past the license agreement section and selecting the drive/partition you may see the two options of pressing L to delete the current installation which will always be there. The other is the press R to repair current which usually isn't available until the current installation has been present for some time.

The repair install has the big advantage of being a great time saver as well as avoiding the need to reinstall everything all over again fresh while folder in the Program Files directory will still be on the drive. The deletion process removes the Windows and DocumentsandSettings folder with all the sub folders included. You end up with a totally new registy with a full install while the repair may only need video or sound drivers reinstalled.
