Hello this is my first post on these forums. I don't know if you can post threads like these or if its in the right section. I know next to nothing about computers and my desktop has a problem id like you to try help me with.

It's a Dell with windows xp. From about 2003. When i turn it on it has the dell screen with the logo and website then it goes black and then there is some writing saying the following:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
system32\DRIVERS.pci.sys

You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"

It may be obvious to some of you guys but not to me. I have a bunch of Dell CD's here but whenever i put one in and press 'r' it just goes to a black screen.

Please Help

thanks alot

Hi there.
You need to boot your system from your XP disc. There should be a disc called 'recovery' or Windows Installation or similar.
Before you do this, you will need to set up your system to run the CD as soon as the computer starts.
To do this, enter your BIOS, and set the first-boot device as your CD-ROM drive.
Insert your CD, and restart the computer. You should be greeted with a Windows Installation screen, and you can then select 'r' to repair your installation.

You need to scan your memory with Memtest86 for errors. Errors like that you show 99% of the time is something to do with bad memory.
