I was having this problem with my computer freezing after the screen saver when the computer went into idle mode. So I tried to a system recovery (the F10 thing when the computer starts) hoping that would fix it. That is what I would usually do on this other computer I had when minor random things would go wrong with it, and it usually worked with no change to anyhting else on the computer.

But when I did it on my new computer, it screwed up nearly every program I had on there. When trying to open the programs I installed on there before, some say the computer isnt setup properly to run this program, some say it cannot open because the program is missing files, some say this program isnt registered (they were) ,and some programs just no longer work properly.

I went to system restore in the start menu to find an earlier date I can set the computer back to. But of course there wasnt a single earlier date to choose from. There was nothing in May to choose from and it wouldnt let me go back to an earlier month.

Please tell me there is some way to fix this to get the computer back how it was? Some of those programs were very expensive programs that I no longer have the setup cd or serial number/registration code to. I am ready to kill myself. :(

and of course with my luck, that whole thing didnt even fix the freezing problem.

You went to use system restore before knowing what the problem was. The startup options menu is accessed by pressing the F8 key on most systems. The system locks you were seeing may have been a simple driver issue or could point to something like memory errors due to the locks seen when the screen saver starts. With no restore points available you would need to have the installation or recovery disk available to follow the instructions seen at: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Can't really help other than to comment for future. System Restore should be considered the last resort before reformatting your hdd. It's not a "fix-it" button. It is a very serious thing to do. Everything you did from the restore point you choose to the present time could be gone.

If you are going to use System Restore, backup anything that you value off the pc. Otherwise it could be the last time you see it.

With a software called SETPOINT by Easydesksoftware, http://www.easydesksoftware.com/spoint.htm daily restore points are made along with extra you can make at different times of the day or night. Right before installing a new program you can manually create a restore point in the event of a bad install where you can go right back to that one just made. When you are into a month far enough far enough you should see a few close enough for use without a big loss unless you just added a variety of programs.
