Okay, so now I have a brand new machine and I have turned it on and I want to go out to the internet but I have heard that you are not suppose to do that with a new unprotected machine. Can someone please tell me the detailed steps to take and what order that I would take them. Keep in mind I am a noob.

Please note: I read the required reading from this site and based on that I want to use: AVG 7.5, Ad-Aware 2007 and Zone Alarm. If I understood the reading that is sufficient to protect the machine. Also please be sure to let me know when I am suppose to do the first "windows update" in the chronology. Lastly, I do have internet access from another computer if I need to download something and install it on the new machine.

Thank you. I appreciate your time.

I would install in this order:
1) Antivirus, before you connect to the internet.
2) Connect to internet and update antivirus
3) Download and install Windows Updates
4) Install any other software you want to run (Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc...)

Well first you NEED a firewall before entering the online universe with your computer. I recommend downloading Comodo firewall but first turn on your windows firewall before going online. The purpose of Comodo firewall is that it is a very good firewall.

Next after you install Comodo turn off windows firewall and install the following onto your system.

Advanced WindowsCare - Excellent for basically keeping your system up and running fast.

Avast - A great virus protection program that catches the virus before even entering your pc.

Spyware Doctor and Ad-Aware - These are powerful spyware removal tools.

All of these programs are free but they do also have a pro version.

Peter, a couple of questions. I took your advice and downloaded Advance Window Care but I have one question. They claim that one click and in 2 minutes your computer is maintained but my scan is getting hung up on the "pricy sweep". It has been running at least two hours. Is this common for the first scan or is something wrong? Also, I wnet to download Comodo and it has two versions 32 bit and 64 bit. I am not familiar with this terminology. Which one would be best for my desktop.(Acer Aspire T180).Thank you.
