Please update me on AM3 chipsets and motherboards

Hi guys,

I am going to be buying an AMD Phenom II X4 CPU (still to decide) and would need to have a quick summary (performance run-down, strengths and weaknesess.. the usual deal) of the chipsets currently on the market:

AMD 760G
AMD 770
AMD 785G
AMD 790FX
AMD 790GX
AMD 790X
NVIDIA nForce 430
NVIDIA nForce 750
NVIDIA nForce 980

Which of the above are considered the most suitable for a high-end PC? I intend to build one soon and need to catch-up on the AMD side of things. I hate to admit it, but I am behind on things. Thanks a lot in advance.

I have looked at this link: http://www.computerforum.com/156593-am2-am2-am3.html

What I am really interested is any real-time performance difference, if any :)

For high end with AMD chipsets it would be the 790X then the 790FX. The difference is the 790X is X8/X8 in crossfire, the 790FX is X16/X16.

The 790GX is just a 790X with onboard video. That can run C/F in X8/X8

The 770 is a single slot board.

The 760 and 785 are the onboard video boards with the 785 the better one.

The Nvidia 750/980 are SLI boards.

The 750a is X8/X8 in SLI.
The 980a is X16/X16 in SLI

Both the 750/980 have built in inboard video, like the AMD 790GX.

At this time I would get a AM3 DDR3 board.

Thanks

Thanks for the update, that really clarified things for me. It really does not seem so drastic of a change so far, so I feel much better. Now, I have to look into graphics cards, there are plenty more types that I have not yet seen to choose from.

There are a few variations. Like some AMD 785 boards come with two PCIe X16 slots. They are really just hybrid Crossfire boards.(Where you can use a lowerend video card with the onboard video) The second slot only runs in X4, would be a waste in CrossFire. Would be better off getting a 790GX board.

But from top to bottom
AMD
790FX
790X
790GX
785
780

Nvidia
980a
750a
