Plugged in not charging

I have an HP DV-7 1020us with windows 7. When I turn the computer on, the battery indicator will say plugged in, charging, but after about 5 minutes it will change to plugged in not charging and I can't get it to charge.

I have tried restarting, leaving the battery out, and checked updates. When I take out the battery and the put it back it, it will charge for about 5 minutes then switch back to not charging.

Maybe ive misresd this but you should only charge the battery when its charge is v low and not try to keep it topped up as this damages the battery memory and dont used the lappy all day with the ac cord plugged in

yes i realize this, but once i leave it unplugged and let it drain to a low percentage, when i plug it back in it wont charge unless i constantly take the battery out and in... thats my problem

also sometimes it doesnt even sense the battery when it is in

Make sure you've gotten all Windows updates (Vista, correct?). Also, try shutting it down, unplug it and plug it back up and see if it charges any more while it's off.

He already checked for updates, but shutting it down, unplugging, and then trying to charge with it off is a good idea. If it still doesn't work, you may have a malfunctioning battery or charger.

How long have you had this machine? And, do you usually use it with the battery in and attached to AC power?

Your symptoms sound like a bad power supply. If the battery is eventually charging, and will also charge with the computer off but plugged in, I doubt the battery is bad. Let us know if the battery charges when the computer is off - completely off, not sleeping.

HP has had some issues with their power supplies dying prematurely due to overheating. This occurs more frequently with more power hungry machines that are used on a regular basis. Do you have a spare power supply handy to test?

Have you tried replacing the battery with a new one to see if it solves the problem, if it doesn't then return the battery.

Sounds like the connection from the battery to the laptop is shorting out or something when the laptop is on.

I have no idea about your problem. But I do know, it doesn't affect your battery's "memory." With the development of Lithium Ion batteries, memory's were no longer a problem. So don't worry about that.

I knew it! I'm glad someone finally was able to test this :P There has been an issue with Windows Vista for a while now. As long as the computer charges while it's off, you should be fine, hardware wise. I still don't know exactly what causes this problem, but I'm thinking some Windows updates have fixed it.

the battery is brand new, i just got a new battery and adapter because they both stopped working and were under warranty

OK. Then it is probably what The_Other_One is mentioning below.

I remember reading something about this possibly being an issue with the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery module. Is this what you are referring to? I recall some folks having mixed results by removing and re-installing this. I thought that was fixed with some recent updates, too.
