and when do they differ from .ico files(which are icon files).??
i looked on the internet but couldn't find anything clarifying.

The files with ".png" for the file extension...it identifies the type of file, like
".txt" ".jpg"

PNGs are pictures. Like JPEG and BMP and GIF.

PNG files are also Image files but as JPEG files have .jpg extensions or Bitmap files have .bmp extensions same way PNG files are image files with .png extension
