Point to Point WIFI

What is the outside range of off the shelf consumer grade WIFI hardware? I need to transmit approx 500' with clear line of sight and zero obstructions. The connection will be internet only so I don't need 100mbps. Also, must the antennas be externally mounted or can they be in the attics. (Yes, I am lazy and don't want to have to crawl through the attic to run the line and then climb on the roof to mount an antenna outside if I don't have to)
 
im not sure about wireless "N" but i think "G" is 100m no obstructions also remember that if it rains it will knockout the signal.
