popmail password

Being new to computers I was quite proud that I managed to set up a pop.gmail.com account,linked to windows mail.Windows security ask me to give username and password when I try and use windows mail but what I made a note of fails to work.Undeterred, I tried to change username and password in my google account, but this fails.My other email is hotmail, which won't work with windows mail - any suggestions?

Any new hotmail account made in the last couple years, will not be able to use pop email programs to download it. I'm sure the other one is just an email server setting wrong or something.

thanks,my log in details work now,seems like windows security was slow updating (?)Then defender wouldn't allow web page to be sent via windows mail until I changed wall settings- nothing is straightforward with computers, it seems.
