Positive and negative polarity?

How can you tell the difference between the two? I have 2 laptops and they both use the same charger.

I got a car charger from a mate and hooked it up to one of the laptops and now it will not charge at all.

I didnt realise that the tip on the end had a 'positive' polarity and 'negative' polarity setting.

What symbol should I look for to determine the different polarities and is the laptop buggered from the possible wrong polarity?

Thank you please. :)

"+" = Positive.
"-" = Negative.
If there are no symbols, then red is positive and black is negative, if colors are used.

I have done an extensive search and found what I was needing to know, but the unit will still not charge. Is this a knackered battery?
