Possible bottleneck/upgrade.

Hey. Looking to update my desktop, which is just under 2 years old. Can you suggest where my rig is bottlenecked, or simply out of date.

Specs are:
Asrock 4Core 1600-D800 MOBO
Intel Core 2 Due E8500
2 x 2GB PC6400 DDR2
nVidia 9800GT 512MB

Yeah it's a little dated, but still runs things like Crysis and GTAIV at a fairly high level.

I'm also going to be investing in a new case, something with good cooling, any suggestions for this?

so my opinion is that it is out of date, but not too far. now here are what your computer supports (your mobo)
- LGA 775 for Intel® Core™ 2 Extreme / Core™ 2 Quad / Core™ 2 Duo / Pentium® Dual Core / Celeron®, supporting Penryn Quad Core Yorkfield and Dual Core Wolfdale processors
- Compatible with all FSB1600*/1333/1066/800MHz CPUs
- Supports Hyper-Threading Technology
- Supports Untied Overclocking Technology
- Supports EM64T CPU

and

- Dual Channel DDR2 memory technology
- 2 x DDR2 DIMM slots
- Supports DDR2 800/667 non-ECC, un-buffered memory
- Max. capacity of system memory: 4GB*

that is not only for my and your benefit but for others too
so upgrade your CPU, to quad core minimum, upgrade your GPU to like GTX 250/60 depends on how much money you want to spend. i guess your ram is ok, i dunno what speed it runs at so can;t comment.
good cooling go for antec 902, but it will be loud

i am actually surprised it runs crysis and GTA at high settings, although i think GTA 4 is really unlimited it would just use all you have..D

Thanks for the advice dude, any suggestions on the ever-evolving AMD/Intel debate?

Also, I liked the look of the Antec 900 as apposed to the 902.
 
I'd go with a video upgrade for the time being - a GTX 460/470 or a 5850/5870 given you have enough PSU. Wait a little longer before investing in MB, CPU, etc until the new offerings from Intel and AMD become available.
 
Don;t mind really with the 900 or 902, the 902 is a bit more friendly towards building computer, better for the cpu cooler, since you can access the bolts on the other side, so don;t have to remove the whole motherboard, also spot for SSD drive, i think its a bit bigger. one problem i had with it is that my GPU was made to be on the top but 902 is on the bottom so had a bit of trouble reaching, but in the end it was all good.
 
The case i'll be getting as a gift. So that's not included in my budget. It'll probably be a 902.

Otherwise, my budget is around £300.

I was thinking a GTX 460 1024mb for the GPU.

Is the PCU adequate at the moment, as mentioned above?

I'm assuming the cooling should be fine if I get a 902. it seems to have good airflow and fanpower as far as I can see, and I have a casefan to add to it.

Anything i've missed?

GPU first upgrade I would do defo (GTX460, [DX11]), GTX260/GTS250 (DX10) is old, PC6400 RAM = 800MHz DDR2, No point upgrading CPU with budget of £300, the E8500 is one of the top dual-core 775 CPUs, you'd need to get Q9*** which would take up half his budget outright; as for the case, I've seen an awesome review in customPC of the SilverStone Raven RV02, its about £90, good cooling and innovative design, the motherboard is rotated so that the fans are at the bottom of the case: hot air rises naturally, so the fans have to work less hard.
