Possible HD Issue?

So I just went from IDE to SATA and this new drive is sorta freaking me out.

The SATA drive is Seagate ST3320620AS Barracuda 7200.10 7200RPM 16MB Cache 320gb

It makes strange sounds from time to time and is over all louder then my IDE ever was. I also get the feeling like I am waiting on the drive vs the drive keeping up with me like my old 2mb IDE use to before it died.

It is making a sound like "Arrrrrrrrrr" when I boot up Vista...it happens right before the Vista splash and vista wont load till it stops (5-10 seconds of black screen) and it randomly does while doing anything HD intensive.
The 5-10 seconds of black screen is new...it use to not do it...it just started today.

Each of those deep dips on the screenshot is when it made during the noise. I am still under the 1 month warranty with TD so id like to figure out if its a problem or not.

I currently have 212gbs free and I just did a defrag this morning.

Anything look wrong here? Also I have removed the pin so its 3.0 vs 1.5 my board does support it. I just wanna know if these sounds are normal or bad...I don't feel like waiting 6 weeks with seagate for a exchange.

Also I did make sure it was secure and not rattling...this is coming from the drive.

Well next morning I got 2 back to back BSOD while just idling 5 mins after boot up. First BSOD I got while uploading some family videos via rapidshare for my family. Second one happened right after boot up after the bsod.

Lucky for me my old IDE still has enough fight to make this post.

I ran memtest for 1 complete pass took about 1 hour 20 mins...said my memory was fine no errors or anything. I only had a 5 min bsod/reboot when I had dead memory so I wanted to test it first.

So I am thinking its the hard drive....if there are any other tests I could run please lemme know. I want to get my facts straight before Monday when I ship the drive back.

I can't seem to fetch the mini dump I am trying though...I am running my old IDE with the SATA on slave so I can retrieve my material.

Going to try a format and see if it is Vista first.

Sorry for not seeing this sooner. Yes, it sounds as your Drive is failing; some last for years, others not so long:( It's just the way it is, sadly. If it was just a BSOD or other random issue, I'd go with the bad OS install route, but you mentioned the Drive was making an odd noise, so I'd be sketchy about spending time on a re-install.

One thing about the noise though, you mentioned it was something 'Arrrrrr', yes? One long Arrrrrr or several shorter Arrrrr's (Yes, I'm saying "Arrrrrr" like a pirate as I'm typing:))? Typically, failing Drives click, but really any odd noise is a bad noise.

I see....what a shame I guess they don't make them as dependable as the IDE anymore.

Also yeah I thought pirate too but to be fair I just got off from a 12 hour day and was piss tired.

I guess the sound would be more like the spinner not moving but it keeps trying to move it....the sound is in no way good sounding and it happens when I push the drive to high load.

I am almost wondering if I can get a different HD now....with luck the next one is also quieter because this one is irritating...can always hear clear as day when it seeks.

Thinking of sucking up and getting it exchanged with
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...?EdpNo=3179250&csid=ITD&body=MAIN#detailspecs

seems like more quiet and with luck no defective.

I will say one thing...I never installed vista before in under 30 mins....my old 2mb was a 1-2 hours.

Well Drives are quirky in terms of other computer components in that, aside from fans (which really don't count in this case), they have the only moving parts. Moving parts = more likely to break down. "IDE or SATA" really doesn't come into play so much as "Drives have moving parts". Some people will say 'never buy this type of Drive', or "SE's are total crap, get a Raptor instead, but the fact remains: every single Drive from every single company has the same chance to suddenly fail; it's entirely random.

Yeah just wish it wasn't for me ^-^
TG is going to hate me soon...they sent me 2 dead MB 1 MB that blew when I tested it and a dead CPU chip so this is going to be my 3rd purchase that I need to return for another.

Odd part is other then UPS destroying my PC case I never had to return anything from newegg.

Either case thanks for the help...though why couldn't this have happened on Monday...hell even sunday would have worked ^-^
