Possible router problem... Need Advice

I am currently using ATT&T for my internet service. A little over a month ago, my service became sporadic at best causing the router to reboot every few minutes. The service would return after about a minute. I've called AT&T several times and talked to their tech people. They tried resetting the modem 3 times before a tech was sent out to check the line. The tech checked the line and fixed 3 problems but the problem is still happening. AT&T finally sent out a tech to check my system and gave me a new 2wire modem. My problem persists as the new modem isn't solving the problem. I talked to the tech while he was at my place and the problem continued. He seemed to think it was a grounding issue but I tried moving the modem to a direct grounding plug. The problem is still rearing it's ugly head.

Right now, I am using two laptops on the line. One has XP and the other has Win7 on running. My old modem was a 2wire 1701G and the new one is also a 2wire. Any ideas on what can be done other than complaining to AT&T again? Thanks in advance.

So you are using a modem/router combo unit? Try hooking up one of the laptops with an ethernet cable and see if the internet on it goes out when the wireless goes out. If so, then its an isp problem. If you still have internet with the one attached with an ethernet cable but not the wireless, you may have wireless inteference from a new appliance in the home.

Thanks for the info. I don't have any new products in the house that would cause a problem but maybe a neighbor does? I'll give that a shot and see what happens! Oh, almost forgot. We changed the channel the router uses for wireless when the tech was out here. He felt that might be a problem also. Just plugged in the cable so I'll see what happens.

UPDATE: Seems the problem has been solved with connecting a hard wire to my modem. Now I have to wonder what is causing the interference with my wireless connection. I have nothing near the modem that would cause the problem. I am wondering if it's coming from a neighbor?

Access the modems settings and see if you can change the wireless channel. You may need to call ATT for help accessing the modem and changing the setting.

Try setting your wifi to use a different channel. It's possible a neighbor's wifi or even a cordless phone to be interfering with the channel the router is currently using.

Well to answer both questions we changed the channel when the tech was here as he said the same thing. Problem persisted. I think we were middle of the road and changed it to like 11 or something (can't remember now). Anyways, I plugged in a Ethernet cable and the internet is working fine now. With that being said, and changing the channels what else could cause this problem? I guess I am going to have to go through all the channels to see if I can find a solution as I hate having to plug a cable into my laptop. Thanks again for the help I will keep you posted.

Either you have wireless interference somewhere or you have a bad modem/router unit.

This router is new. The tech brought it with him and the problem persisted. Now on the last part of your question, WTH is causing the problem? the only person close to me hasn't bought anything new so I am wondering how to chase the problem down so I can go back to my wifi. Cheers.

Just try the cable for awhile and see if you lose connection. If you do then its something in your line. Very weird problem you have here. Except maybe try a dedicated modem and getting a separate dedicated router. I usually don't recommend the modem/router combo units especially from ATT.

Cable is working flawlessly atm. What router do you suggest? My old 2wire worked like a champ for years. The new one provided always wants to reboot.

I know I'm probably thinking outside the problem but I noticed that my laptop running XP has no issues with the wifi at all since the problem started. I ran a virus check and found nothing. Does anyone know of any issues with Win7 causing the router to reboot? Thanks.

What sort of encryption is on the router, if any?

If its WPA/WPA2 specifty it to WPA. Then try WEP 64bit, and if all else fails, remove the encryption all together to test the wireless signal.

Can nearly guarantee that dropping to WEP64bit will sort the problem.

You say its rebooting but you aren't losing internet on the wired connection? If it is rebooting you will also lose connection on the wired ports.

OK let me address the above two posts. I am a moderate computer user so I'm not sure how to handle the 64bit your talking about. Maybe you can walk me through it? As for the post right above, let me be a little more specific. The way the tech explained it to me was that the router still had the connection but needed to reset it. I don't know how to explain it any further. I'll address some new issues in the next post. Cheers.

SO here's an update to my problem. Hopefully I can explain this with out confusing anyone. The laptop that was giving me problems crashed and I had to send it back to HP for repair. that took almost a month! During the time I was with out the laptop I was using my trusty old laptop with XP on it. No I say No issues while I was using just that laptop. Now, I have my repaired laptop back. tried to use the wireless again and left the XP one hard wired. First day no problems, and now guess what? Problems are back! Error need to reboot. And this new modem they left me I am hating to no end! I think since I having the same problem, I am going to go back to the trusty old one. At least it'll just be slow until it regains the conntection and won't tell me to reboot! So does anyone have any idea why my second laptop is crashing my internet? Is it coincidental? I am leaning towards the latter. I am going to plug in my old modem and see what happens.
