Possible stupid thermal compound question

OK so I unmounted my heat sink from the cpu...it had thermal compound on it. I was curious if i need to replace it...I know you need to if it is a pad, i do have some artic silver handy...so I am just curious.
 
You don't have to...but it's best to. Just clean the CPU and Heatsink and then reapply some AS5...so you pretty much just have to clean and follow instructions.
 
I always do. I also use 99% rubbing alcohol to clean in. Only cost $5 for a jug that will last you years.
 
i bought artic silver and it came with two liquids one for cleaning the old past off and one to prep the surface
