I'm a student studying computer engineering, is it possible to lead a free lance life like doing odd jobs at schools and libary's? Do Libary's need ppl to work there computers like defraging etc? I've put in job app's for compusa considering best buy but i've heard bad stuff about geek squad. They tried to rip my granny off 60$ to install ram......

you are best off free lancing to small businesses and end users (consumers) because almost all other places have their own IT staff.

$50/hour is cheap (like ram installs, software installs)
$100/hour is average (any type of long configuration or more advanced install)
$150/hour is higher end (like charging for configuring servers and networks)

I'd imagine many jobs are very easy fixes, computers simply owned by inexperienced users. I wouldn't imagine that you'd make alot, but I sure do like those rates! It's annoying when a tech simply makes a minor adjustment and charges $100..

Yeah, you can definitely make some extra cash, I do. I just keep my ears open and whenever I hear someone say something about computer problems I offer my assistance. Places like Best Buy rip people off so hard that it's easy to beat their prices and still bring in a hefty profit. When you consider that they charge $300 for virus/spyware removal, $150 for part installation/upgrade (plus the huge overcharge on whatever hardware you buy from them), about $300 for simple home/office networking, it's not that hard to win over customers by offering services at half the price.
