Posting for a friend's computer: when i try to go to volume control, it says, "There are no active mixer devices available. To isntall mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Add Hareware."

So apparently the desktop doesn't recognize my speakers? this had happen to my friend as well

Oh.. also, sometimes the desktop bar turns into window 9x style from window xp style.. not sure the cause of this.. but it seems to be related to the sound problem.

Anyone got ideas?

I also scanned w/ McAFee but found nothing.

The Classic Windows theme is what you are seeing there not simply a 9X look. This is changed in the display properties. As far as sound the drivers need to be reinstalled for either the onboard or expansion card used. When in the device manager look under the "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers" section to see if anything there has a yellow exclaimation mark next to it.

Right click on that and choose the update driver option once you have either the board's software cd or have downloaded an update that you have saved to a folder on the drive. An update may have it's own installer.

You might find something under "other devices" as another place to look with an exclamation there. The next idea would be trying reinstalling the drivers with the software disk that comes with it or download an update. Creative drivers can still be a nuisance at times!
