Possible virus on flash drive?

I don't know this is an error or virus in my pen drive, but when I am trying to delete or format the drive it says it is write protected.
I can't even clean or fix it. Defragmention is also not happening, I scanned it with Mcafee but no virus. Any suggestions?
Not sure whether this is the correct place to post this thread.
 
Bad pen drive most likely. A lot of people posted this online and never figured it out. As long as you didn't install security on the drive then its most likely bad.
 
Will safe mode help it? I will check it out soon.
I don't have important data in it, but I need the pen drive.
 
How exactly did you try to format it?
Because there are some types of viruses which are preventing them from formatting while you are in Windows.

Before you toss it away,try to format it using external tools which are working OUTSIDE Windows environment such as Kill Disk,Windows Live CD or Ubuntu CD.

I tried
right click->format
Then answer comes "The disk is write protected".
What external tools can I use? Any links?
