Possible virus, what to do?

I downloaded Irfanview from their website yesterday, (I needed a crappy art program to play with).
After it downloaded my computer was running a little slow and certain functions wouldn't open(My computer, My pictures...) I immediatly ran a scan w/ Pc-cillin, which only found two possible spyware/adware cookies that I removed.
Well I shut my system down only to return later to find that when it booted up it took a little longer to get to the XP login menu, then after that it went to my background image but nothing else loaded.
I opened task manager and tried starting some new tasks using "explorer" or "desktop", this caused my desktop to flash up for a brief second then disapear.
Oddly enough I was able to get firefox to work and still have internet browsing capabilities. Anyone have any suggestions on what to do?

First i would suggest trying another virus/spyware software package. AVG antirurus and AVG anti spyware are good free examples. download and install these then update them. once you have done this use these two packages and do a full system scan and see what it brings up.

If you have any problems with getting these installed on your computer, you could boot your computer in to safe mode and do it through that.

if you can't install any programs you can run a virus scan online I think symantec has one on their website

Try to look for a good antivirus and update and run the scan . Otherwise uninstall the application and tghen restart your PC. Hope this will definately help you to fix the problem. Do reply when you get over it.

The reason that the comp only loaded the background is because someything is probably preventing explorer from opening, therefore it's not very strange that firefox would stil run as your program files have basically no ties with explorer. Did you say you actually tried to manually start the process explorer? If not then type explorer into the 'new task' of the application tab of task manager and see if that helps at all

It might also be a WinSock Problem try to run in CMD and type in this <netsh winsock reset catalog>

If it doesnt work.. Sorry i dont do h4ck5 with Windows no more almost got arrested.
