Possibly vista problem? Very confused...

Here's the deal... One of my good friends just got a new Dell Vostro 1400 laptop. All was running great on it until today! All of a sudden she couldn't connect to AIM, MSN Messenger, Skype, download virus updates, or even download FILES! However, she could browse the internet... Go figure. I uninstalled all the Norton crap, and downloads began to work. However, she still couldn't do anything like AIM.

MSN's diagnostic thing said some ports were blocked(as I figured) however no firewall, including Window's firewall is installed or running. Is there something I'm overlooking? Perhaps some other safety feature in Vista or something Dell might of loaded?

Now, I know the download's didn't work when on a wired or wireless network. I don't know if she tried to sign on AIM using a wired network...

turn off that whole god forsaken security center in vista, it messes with too much stuff. Or install windows XP, linux, or buy a Mac.

there may be some strange security setting for her router that blocks a bunch of common ports like whatever port AIM uses by default. If that's the case opening and forwarding them would fix it. You know how to do that. :D

well most internet traffic goes over port 80, you could maybe forward a port or two and see whats up, but my guess is its vista. Take your XP laptop over to her location (i think you mentioned in a previous thread you have one) and see if your internet based apps work under her router. I got a feeling they do.

It's probably that stupid security center. Again, I've not messed too much with Vista so I don't know what all it has...

Now I was on her network and signing on Trillian just fine. Her router was acting up, but we both were doing stuff at the same time and I wasn't have any problems. Her parents desktop was working fine too, and I'm quite sure it's also on wireless...
