Interesting it'd drop you to an EFI shell.

I think the GOP is related to UEFI features on the GPU. I had to flash my 290 with a UEFI-capable BIOS in order to get that to work, might not be an option with the 7970 :(

I could flash it to a 280X maybe, but not really sure if that's worth the effort or risk.
 
Yeah the best you can do is disable the SATA ports you aren't using and other bits and pieces like that. Make sure the SSD is the only thing in your boot priorities list.
 
Done all of that. It's just a slow board. If I could revert it to a Legacy BIOS I probably would as I remember it being faster before I switched to a UEFI BIOS. According to their page I can't roll it back though, so meh. It still boots up pretty quick and I'm not that picky, just more annoyed by it. I'm not going to mess with my video card BIOS either.
