Power adapters

Hey everyone,

So I'm about to install a SSD into my desktop computer; however I've run into some annoying hardware issues.

The power cable I'll need to use to plug into my SSD is going to be too short to reach. The power cable itself that runs from my PS is currently giving power to my DVD drive and current HD. There is one more spot on the cable that I can plug something into, but like I was saying.. it's too short to reach.

Are there extension cables that I can buy? I've looked online for awhile now and can't seem to find the appropriate adapter. The closest cable I found was this one..

But it's not going to work because I don't have any free male/female ends to connect it into.

With all this being said, I have a spare 6 pin spot available on my 700W PS.. but I can't seem to find the appropriate cable for that either. I just need to get a cable that will give my SSD power, no idea why this is so hard for me right now lol

Anyways.. that's my situation and any help would be greatly appreciated.

(side note, the other cables on my PS are being used by graphics cards)

Cheers!

What is the model number of your power supply you have now? You should have some open 4pin molex's.

That power supply has 6 sata power connectors. You should have plenty to hook it up. If not, you have 4 4pin molex connectors which you can use with one of those adapters you posted.

You have a modular power supply correct? You should have a cable connected to the power supply or maybe you don't have it connected but it should have 4 - 4pin molex connectors on it, they will look like this.

Ohh gotcha, thanks.

Last I looked they're all being used. That's why I was wondering if there are other adapters available or if I can plug something else into my PS that will give me that 4pin molex connection. Then I can just purchase the other adapter I linked earlier and connect those together.

I'll post another picture of the inside shortly.

What do you have plugged into the 4 molex connectors? All your devices should be sata correct?

They're all being used for my video card if I recall correctly. Then the other ones are being used to power my DVD and HD.

Well, a video card shouldn't be using a molex connector, it should be using a 6 pin pci express power connector and unless your dvd and hd are more than 10 years old then they should be sata connectors. Sata looks like this.

Well this is the inside. Not sure if the pictures will work to explain it.

That's exactly what I was looking for. So I can unplug the HD now, use that extension cable to plug back in my HD Aswell as my SSD.

Thank you very much for all your help.

Side question, is 16gb of ram overkill ?

Cheers!!

All depends on how much ram the games you plan on playing take. For most users 8gb is plenty and you really don't want to get more unless you are using at least 80 percent of available ram.

Thanks much, you've been extremely helpful.

I think I'll just order the 16Gb's as it's only 100$, although I feel the SSD alone will boost speeds more than what I need.

Are there any issues I might run into when installing the RAM? I was just going to replace them into coordinating colored ram slots. Makes sense right?

Sorry for all the amateur questions, I just like covering all my bases before doing purchases :). I live in the middle of no where, so shipping stuff at all once is the best way to get stuff to me and I have no one up here that knows computers haha
