On the MOBO, there is a 4 pin power connector near the CPU. IN my MOBO manual it says that the system cannot boot without that connected. I bought a new generic PSU and hooked it up. But it wouldnt boot.

I took out the SPU 4 pin 12V connecter and hello! it booted!

Im an idiot. I plugged that 12V 4 pin CPU connector in while it was on and...
(curiosity killed the cat)
0--- BOOM ---0

Everything stopped and nothing works now...

Please help!
 
You never plug or unplug "any" direct power feeds when a system is running. In fact it is often a good idea to even turn the breaker switch even with the system completely shutdown to prevent accidental damage. Hopefully you are able to get a replacement board there. You just yanked 12v straight out of the board and then suddenly sent it back in and most likely cooked the board. A number of things could have let go when that was done All you can do now is go over the board carefully to see if you find any score marks.

Anyway PC Eye thanks for your help... So if I get a new MOBO, should It be fine?

That 12V CPU connector DID NOT BOOT when it was plugged in. WHen I unplugged it, it booted. I just connected it while it was running.

My question is, how did it boot without that plugged in???
 
probably a flawed PSU or motherboard.. the 12V rail could have been shorted whith the 12v connector plugged in (could be dues to the 4 pin connector having a +12v and a ground pin flipped in the connector.)
are the cables ordened lik this on the 4 pin connector?

if not.. my gues would be the PSU and or the motherboard are dead, since the 12V rail was shorted then.

if thats the cause, it would also explain why it didnt boot with the connector connected.. since a switched supply, with an unlimited big load (shortage, theoretically.. ) cant 'boot'. ( switched supplies have to, well,.. speed up too, and with a too big load, they just cant start up)
I'm not saying thats the cause.. i merely say this because this is the first thing that comes to my mind after reading the post :)

What you have done is fried your whole mobo and possibly everything that was connected to it (ram, cpu, video card.....)

You may have a reversed wiring in the plug itself or you managed to plug it in reversed where the lead was then grounded. The best thing to do is review the installation section in the board's manual when it discusses connecting the power. The other possible reason was already mentioned about a possible board defect being seen.

But it booted with the CPU power connector connected with my old PSU.

And no, all the other components work fine. Could it be a defect PSU?

As I mentioned here the wiring in the plug may be reversed. Did you still have the old supply to see if this is the problem being seen? You could also compare the wire going into the plug with another supply. If that's the case then a miswired supply left the factory were it was made. Hopefully the 12v feed to ground didn't damage anything else.
