Hello, I just bought a new graphics card (nvidia 9600) and i was reading it and i saw that it needed a 400w+ power supply. So i went into my computer to find that i only have a 300w.
So i got out an old computer in the basement and found a 800w power supply! But here is my problem i was talking to one of my friends (an electrician) and he said that didn't know if it was safe to put it into the comp. He said that they put in a 300w one in there for a reason and that i should not touch it because if i put the new one in and turn it on it might be too much power and fry my computer.

So i am wondering if it is safe to put in this 800w power supply.

Also this new graphics card that i got need its own power.
Do it get that off the power supply box direct?

Thanks hope som1 can help me =D

You can safely increase the size of power supply you have in almost all computers without issues. I can take my 650w Antec out and throw in a 1200w Ultra and have no problems at all.

The thing I am concerned about is what kind of computer you exactly have. With only a 300w power supply it must be old or a business class computer. Please post your exact computer name and model number so we can do a little more research. This will also help us determine what graphics card will be best. Don't try stuffing the 800w power supply in until we can do a little checking first.

The graphics card does draw power directly from the power supply. There will be a cable you will plug into the card itself. The 9600 GT cards have a 6 pin power cable that will run the card.

Correction: it was a 650w i miss read it.

and my computer is an hp newer
running AMD live
with 700gb
i think it is like a 2.60gz or something like that.

i just finished putting the mother board from that computer into the new case and all the other things as well (hard drive exc.)

You electrician friend doesn't have a clue. A PSU will only provide the required amperage (thus wattage), and is dependant on the load. That is, if you requirements are 400W, a 1000W PSU will only provide 400W. There is no danger in overspecing a PSU, but serious issues if you underspec.

For that GPU, you require at least a Corsair 550W.
