Power Supply For A Sony Vaio

Hi

I have a Sony VAIO PCV-RS630G that I would like to upgrade the video card for. I plan on a ATI9800. ATI recommends at least a 300W power supply. The Video card in the case right now is an ATI9200. Seems the power supply is rated at 266W (or 295W). I have been looking at some of the ANTEC supplies but am wondering if they are comaptable with my case and connections to the mother board. Does any one have experiance with the VAIO or suggestions?

Thanks

John

yes, they are compatable, all atx power supplies with P4 support should do you right + antec is like the leader in sweet power supplies that actually put out the wattage at which thier rated

im pretty sure if you have an oem comp you have to buy an oem psu.. soem people have had to buyu dells since thye had dells and i thin sony is even then dell in only certain parts can work

I am afraid of that. I sent an email to Antec but have not heard from them yet. Sony parts said I couldn't just put another one in there but could not provide me with the info on how to upgrade the one I have with a Sony part. I am kind if p@##$ off at that. I will be very dissapointed if I cant upgrade.

While the Antec is compatible with the Ati card, it may not be compatible with the VAIO mobo since the mobo may have stupid connectors.

Thanks Praetor

Yep appears so :(. I got an email from ANTEC asking to check the 20 pin connector. That seems to pin out ok. I have 2 other connectors from the existing power supply: 1 is a square 4 wire connector (2 black on top and 2 yellow on the bottom). The 2nd is a 3 wire in a row small connector with white, blue and black wires. Are those standard? If so I maybe in luck :)

Another difference I may have is the Sony PSU has 1 fan blowing straight into the computer case. The back of the PSU uses natural ventalation out the back of the case. The existing PSU is at the back top of the case. Seems most of the ANTECs have 2 fans. One should blow the same as the existing one but the other will blow straight down in the case (about 10" from the video card). Seem ok?

This is called the ATX12 (aka Intel P4 connector)

The 2nd is a 3 wire in a row small connector with white, blue and black wires .... what PSU connector is that?
Is this connected to anything? If it is, what is it? Sounds like an OEM connector

You sure it's into and now out of

also on the 20pin you would need to make sure the wires are the proper match, not just that there are 20 of them but it doesn't look like that matters, that 3 wire one is one I have never seen/heard of before.

Yes the 3 wire plug is connected to the mother board. That one maybe trouble.

Doh, your right, the fan is sucking the air and venting through the PSU out the back I guess. There is another fan venting out the back that gets its power from the mother board.

Wires match.

Guess the 3 pin is going to end all this :( Wish Sony would just tell me which is there next model up and I would buy it. It don't seem that easy :(
